Casumo Casino has added the latest greek mythology themed Helios’ Fury slot from Relax Gaming to their casino, the game set sail for general release on the 6th of October 2021.
The setting for this machine takes you back to ancient times, tasked with defending Rhodes from an attack of warships with the help of Helios in defending this small island. The Ancient Greek god Helius is regarded as the personification of the Sun in ancient Greek religion and myth (source).
The visual design may seem somewhat muted and understated compared to previous Relax Gaming releases such as Dead Man’s Trail. You can rest assured that this rather simplistic but ingenious slot packs a punch too.

Helios Fury Base Gameplay
The base gameplay in Helios Fury takes place on a standard 5×3 reel layout. The payline structure uses “Connected Ways“, which are essentially any connected matching symbols from left to right to award wins. In the base game, this results in 99 ways to win.
With a mix of regular and high paying suitably themed symbols such as Helmet, Shield, Sword and Horn, the main focus in the base game is the Ship Wild symbols which act as “walking wilds” when forming wins and are also the critical symbols required to trigger the bonus round.
Hot Spot Reel
The 5th reel on this slot is the key to triggering the main bonus feature. The Fury Free Spins are triggered by getting a walking wild ship all the way across to these reels and then scoring a win (5 of a kind) that uses this symbol whilst it’s on the 5th reel.
These wild symbols will continue to advance across the reels, provided new wins are formed using them, and multiple ship wilds can appear on the reels at any one time, making these wins much easier to land.
While this may sound somewhat confusing and difficult to achieve, factor in that with multiple walking wilds and the 99 connected ways, this is reasonably achievable and gives you great insight into how the bonus round will work.

Wild Re-Spin Feature
The Wild Re-Spin feature is triggered every time the Wild symbol forms part of a win, the symbol will move one position to the right, and a re-spin of the reels occurs.
The re-spins keep occurring if new wins, including this wild symbol, are made or until the wild symbol has reached the 5th highlighted reel (Helios Crown).

Helios Fury – Free Spins and Bonus Features
Wild Symbol
The Ship Wild Symbol shown on the right is the key symbol on Helios Fury. As well as helping to create wins, the walking wild mechanic provides additional wins and acts as the main bonus feature trigger on reaching the 5th reel.
Once the bonus round is triggered, you are awarded a starting six free spins. The reels also grow in size, creating a 5×5 reel set and increasing the maximum number of connected ways to 259, essentially giving you more ways to win!

After triggering the Fury Free spins feature, you start with a Wild Ship symbol already present in the middle position of the first reel. The same base gameplay mechanics are in play (Added Wilds, Walking Wilds) with some added juicy extra functionality!
When the wild symbols form wins, they will walk across the reels as before, but on reaching the 5th hotspot reel, they become sticky wilds, award +1 extra free spin and remain on the reels until the bonus round completes.
Any new wild symbols that land in view will also award +1 free spins. When you already have wild symbols stuck in place in these hotspots, the distance a ship has to travel before it becomes sticky is also reduced, acting like a compounded effect of increasing the ease of getting further sticky wilds.
It is quite possible to have completely full rows of wilds stuck in place, even across multiple reels, and this is why the maximum win cap is in place!
The max coinciding win on any spin is actually 5,180x stake, this is achieved with a 20x max 5 of a kind win on all 259 paylines.
With multiple free spins in a bonus round; this can lead to massive wins, which is why the 50,000x win cap is in place.
In our playtest, we found in a good bonus round the combination of both these ways of gaining extra spins can extend the starting six free spins hugely, with some bonus rounds having over 30 free spins in total!
Bonus Buys
There is a bonus buy option in countries where this option is still allowed which allows you to bypass the base game and proceed straight into the Fury Free Spins Bonus round.
The cost of the bonus buy is 90x the current bet level. The theoretical RTP is stated as an increased 97% for this specific bonus buy feature.
Hit Frequencies
The game has a stated hit frequency of 23.98% or just under 1 in every four spins, which is relatively low. However, you need to factor in that the wild re-spin mechanic can lead to several successful winning spins as the walking wilds move across the reels.

The Helios Fury slot actually seems a little like a hidden gem. On first impressions visually, we didn’t get the initial excitement. The graphics seem a bit washed out. The lack of random features makes it look quite basic, and the unusual bonus triggering mechanic is somewhat confusing initially.
Spend a little more time playing this slot, and you will find it to be thoroughly enjoyable and capable. The walking wild bonus trigger works and gives you a great insight into how the bonus feature works.
The “reverse” walking wilds seem like a fresh take on the classic Jack and the Beanstalk slot from NetEnt, with added volatility and potential thrown into the mix. Once you get a good bonus round with lots of added wilds, the excitement and potential of this machine really shines through, quite fitting given Helios being the personification of the Sun.
In our playtests, we managed two bonus features well over 1000x stake. Given the max win is 50,000x, we only scraped the surface of this machine, but the potential is definitely there! The key to huge wins is a constant stream of newly added wilds on each free spin, along with scoring wins to keep them moving and reaching the hotspot, which in turn adds more free spins.
These combined features and the fact they become sticky wilds provides a fantastic bonus feature, so good that we continue to playtest this slot well after the review is done, which for us is an excellent sign!
