Playboy Gold From Microgaming, Is It the Natural Successor to the Classic High Variance Playboy Slot?

Playboy Gold has some very big expectations to live up to with the original Playboy slot being very popular thanks to its super high variance and win potential in the free spins bonus rounds.
The new version uses an enlarged reel set with 6 reels by 10 along with 100 paylines, there are a number of new and different features on offer that includes Jumbo Blocks (6×4 in size), Multipliers, Bonus Wheel, Picking Round and of course Free Spins.
In the base game, there is also a special Re-Spin mode where a huge 4×10 picture symbol locks in place and a respin of the reels occurs with just wilds and blanks present, this feature alone can lead to some fairly decent wins.
The main fun, however, starts from triggering the bonus wheel which requires the regular 3 scatters, from the bonus wheel you can win cash prizes based on bet size, along with the bonus picking round and free spins.

Bonus Features
Jumbo Block Feature – The highest paying symbols can appear on the reels in a gigantic format that span a 6×4 sized rectangle, when these land in view fully they can also grant a Multiplier to any wins, Credit Prize, or up to 4 re-spins.
Jumbo Re-Spin – When this feature is activated a gigantic 4×10 sized symbol is held in place in the middle reel with up to 4 re-spins of the other reels which contain only wilds or blanks after which any wins are paid.
Bonus Wheel – The main bonus wheel is triggered by landing 3 of the Playboy Scatter symbols, from the bonus wheel you can win either credits, free spins or the picking round.

Overall Thoughts
Playboy Gold is a decent release from Microgaming / Triple Edge Studios with plenty of different bonus features in the base game and bonus modes. The Gigantic Symbol Re-Spin mode is the stand out feature.
However, fans of the original Playboy slot will most likely be somewhat disappointed, as Playboy Gold is a totally different machine style. This isn’t more of the same with larger reels. It feels more like a medium variance slot.
In our playtests, we did manage several wins over 100x stake, and the free spins round seems fairly consistent with the gigantic symbols present on every spin, with picking round also offering a win all pick.
Overall as a standalone release, it’s fairly decent, not something we are going to rush to play, comparing to the original Playboy; however, you are likely to be disappointed.
