Rich Wilde and the Wandering City is an interesting take on the Book Style of slot, opting to use a 243-way payline system and some randomly triggered multipliers instead of a regular ten payline machine. However, this does not come without issues.
The major bugbear is that a Book Style slot doesn’t need a 243-way payline system with the expanding symbols feature, as the “scatter like pays” disregard the payline structure already. Using 243-ways paylines means the symbol pays have been reduced massively, with the premium Explorer Symbol paying just 4x stake for a 5 of a kind (which honestly feels pathetic). Even with an 8x Multiplier attached, this isn’t offering anywhere close to a regular 5 of a kind on a standard book slot.
The reel strips in the base game are exactly stacked with matching symbols either, so any good base game hits are almost wholly reliant on a good number of wilds, multipliers and several 5 of a kind. This is generally when a bonus round is triggered with three wild/scatters. It just feels a bit forced for what should be a heavy-hitting book machine.
The potential of this slot is even more focused on the bonus rounds as a result, but even then, the multipliers and 4 or 5 matching symbols seem to be a requirement to get close to a regular book slot potential. The outlier win would be a full screen of explorers and an 8x multiplier, but in general, the bonus rounds feel underwhelming and disappointing, with most ending in the 50x stake region.
One good bonus round hit and a multiplier included can transform this machine. Still, honestly, I’d much rather be playing a bonus round on Book of Ra Deluxe for the potential re-triggers and base game than this machine.
