There’s certainly no questioning of how this slot got its name. Volatile Vikings is a highly volatile release that includes multipliers in the range of 2x right up to 100x. When you factor in that these multiplier values remain persistent in the bonus round, you can expect that the 5/5 volatility and game title will match your expectations.
Volatile Vikings Base Gameplay
The Viking theme on this slot has two distinct themes, the frozen ice theme for the base gameplay, which gets set alight during the bonus feature with a deep red background and animated fire around the Viking ships.
The gameplay in Volatile Vikings takes place on a 6×5 grid layout with symbols dropping in from the top of the reels like a regular slot. However, there are no paylines as such here, and no “cluster pays” either, which on first play can be very confusing working out just how you are scoring wins!
Instead, you are simply looking for a specific number of matching symbols on the reels to create wins. The minimum number required is eight, with additional amounts leading to bigger payouts. The game does refer to them as clusters, but in reality, they need to be visible on the reels in any position.
However, these wins are pretty small. Even with the highest paying symbol only paying out 50x bet with a maximum “cluster”, thankfully, you have the addition of Multipliers which can boost these values to epic proportions.

In the base game, these special multipliers can appear in values of 1x right up to 100x and appear on the reels with an extra number attached to them. This number reflects the number of successive wins required before this multiplier is unlocked, collected, and added to any base game wins.
So for example, a 3x/3 Multiplier reveal symbol means that 3 successive cascades are required before the 3x multiplier is activated and added to any wins.
There are 2 Multiplier Reveal symbols added on every spin. The Multipliers are colour coded in bronze, silver and gold outlines making it easy to identify the most significant and potent multipliers this multiplier reveal feature can produce.
This feature is relatively easy to grasp and keep track of if you already understand the cascading style of wins slots.
This slot’s “Volatile” naming is because of these Multipliers being persistent during the bonus feature. Massive base game hits are also possible with 100x multipliers on offer, but the bonus round is where this slot bursts into fire, and the variance can go crazy!

Aside from the special Multiplier symbols, we covered earlier, the main symbol in the base game to watch for is the Bonus Scatter Symbol.

Volatile Vikings is another excellent slot from Relax Gaming, hot on the heels of Dead Man’s Trail. This machine offers an entirely different slot experience. It proves they can produce engaging slots that don’t just rely on the Money Train/ Money Cart style of bonus rounds.
Whilst this is a super high variance and volatile machine, without the multipliers, it can feel like a weak low hitting machine, the multipliers and particularly the persistent multipliers are the absolute key to winning big of this machine, with a capped win limit of 20,000x it is going to produce bonus rounds on either end of the scale so expect some horrific bonus rounds whilst playing this slot.
Please take full advantage of the demo mode we have included in this review. With the bonus buy option, you can get a swift idea of whether this slot suits your tastes and certainly see how this bonus round can play out with just six free spins.
The lack of payline or even what we would term a proper cluster pay system is confusing. We did have to check through the paytable to understand the wins. Still, once that is out the way, the rest of the game flows nicely. The multiplier system that is linked in with cascading wins works well and is easy to track.
The rarity and tease factor of the vast 50x, and 100x multipliers are something to get excited about once you get close to revealing them, as these immense values can transform regular wins into huge sums.
In our playtests, we tested both the bonus buy features and regular base gameplay triggering. As shown in the screenshots, we had some huge wins but also many bonuses that were well under the 100x bonus buy cost to buy them. The key to good bonuses relies on the multiplier reveal symbols being added quickly into the bonus rounds and hoping that they are the larger multipliers!
The extra spins can keep the bonus round ticking over, but dead spins can be pretty common also, so with just six starting spins, the bonuses can be over in a flash!
Overall, this slot feels similar in play to an updated version of Gonzo’s Quest (NetEnt) that fits better with the current super high variance slots trend. The mechanics differ slightly, of course. Still, if you do love the cascading win style of slot machines, this could well be a modern-day replacement.
