We Go on Safari, Hunting for Big Wins in the African Quest Slot From Microgaming!
32Red Casino has just added the latest slot release from Triple Edge Studios / Microgaming, titled African Quest, a Safari themed 5×4 reel 1024-way slot featuring Kubwa a high paying stacked lion symbol.
Immediately comparisons to Raging Rhino (WMS) spring to mind with a smaller reel set with the same multiplying wilds feature and 2 scatter re-triggers during the free spins bonus round. There are however a few difference thanks to the introduction of Hyperspins which is Microgaming’s paid respin mechanic, which previously featured in Break da Bank Again Respin, this allows you to independently re-spin any of the reels for a cost underneath each reel, allowing you to trigger the bonus round or try your luck at creating bigger wins but be warned these spins can get very expensive depending what symbols are already on the other reels.
The main bonus round is triggered by landing 3 or more scatter with additional scatters providing more free spins along with a selection screen where you can tailor the volatility of the bonus round, less spin with larger multiplying wilds or more spins and lower multipliers, the choice is down to you to find which style you prefer.
With the lower volatility free spins, just 2 scatters awards 6 extra free spins and can really help to extend the bonus round, with multiple re-triggers possible, and these do seem quite frequent during the bonus rounds.
The really big wins, however, come from a combination of the stacked Lion symbols and the multiplying wilds which feature on the middle reels, with a maximum value of 4x these can multiply together creating a huge 64x multiplier (4x4x4) giving wins of up to 5600x stake.
Whilst this slot does feel a little less volatile in normal play that Raging Rhino the maximum win certainly makes this a high variance slot, whilst most bonus rounds may end under 100x stake there is always a chance of a huge win thanks to these multipliers and heavily stacked symbols.

Overall Opinions
The African Quest slot from Microgaming is a reasonable release but suffers somewhat from being so heavily inspired by Raging Rhino. The Hyperspin is a nice feature for triggering the bonus round, but you will miss out on any 4 or 5 scatter bonus triggers using this option.
In our playtests, we did struggle to get any bonus rounds that were over 100x stake, although being a high variance slot just once hit with 3 multiplier wilds should provide a nice win, and even more if the Lion symbol is part of the win!
We did test out the Hyperspins in the base game, but the cost of re-spinning the reels, once a few stacked lion symbols are in view, rises dramatically to over 200x stake per spin, so definitely approach the re-spin mechanic with caution!
